Geshe Lharampa Lobzang Samdup, Tour Leader
Geshe Lozang Samdup was born to father
Phuntsok Sonam and mother Tenzin Dolma in Nubra Chakrasa, Ladakh in the
north of India in the year 1962. He was then called Samdup Wangdue. At the age
of 13, he joined the Buddhist Order in Nubra Dekit Monastery under the
abbotship of Ven. Lobzang Tsephel, from whom he received his preliminary and
novice vows. He was given the novice name Lobzang Samdup. He passed through the
monastic trainings, memorizing the scriptures successfully.
In the year 1980, having joined Drepung
Gomang Monastic University, he started his formal studies in Buddhist
philosophy under the tutorship of the former abbot of the Monastery, The most
Venerable Khensur Lobsang Tenpa. He studied all the five major scriptural texts
that the Monastic University offers; Logic and Syllogism, Perfection of Wisdom,
the Middle Way view, Abhidharmakosh and Vinaya Ethics.
In the year 1982, during His Holiness
the Dalai Lama's visit to Ganden Monastic University, which was founded by Lama
Tsongkhapa, he received his full ordination vows from His Holiness.
In 1989, while still a philosophy
student, he served as the Secretary of Drepung Lachi Monastic University for
two years. He also served as the Secretary of Drepung Gomang Monastery for
three years. And for three more years, he took the responsibility as the Chant
Leader of the Monastery.
Beginning in 1996, he appeared
for the Geshe Lharampa tests given by the All Geluk University Board of
Examination. He successfully finished all six years: 2 years for the Karam
degree, 2 years for the Lopon degree, and 2 more years for the Lharam degree.
He finished in the first division.. After completing the six years examination
for the Geshe degree, the Monastery bestowed upon him the title of Geshe
Lharampa. To celebrate the tremendous achievement of his academic studies, he
reverently offered a grand feast to the Drepung Tsokchen, Gomang Monastery and
Ngari Khangtsen.
In 2002, during the auspicious occasion
of the additional Monalam Festival, which was combined with H.H. the Dalai
Lama's visit in Bodh Gaya, he sat for the final Geshe Lharampa Examination in
front of the Holy Stupa. In that same year, he sat for the final ceremonial
Geshe Test at Ganden Monastic University during the great Monlam Chenmo
Festival. As per tradition, he joined Gyumed Tantric University for
year's training in Tantra. He passed the Tantra exam in the first division.
In the year 2003, he was appointed as
the Secretary of the Future Development Committee of Gomang Monastic
University. The tenure of this office is four years.
He is the Tour leader of the
2006-07 USA and Canada as well as 2008-09 Sacred Art
Tour U.S.A for the Drepung Gomang Monastery, south India.
Sangyal Gyatso
Sangyal Gyatso Ven. Sangyal Gyatso was born September 10, 1983. He became a monk when he was thirteen years old at his native place and entered a monastic temple where he studied the elementary monastic texts. After getting a blessing from H. H. the Dalai Lama, he joined Drepung Gomang Monastery in 1996 to pursue monastic studies. Since then he has been active in his religious practice and studies and at present is studying in the Karam class. He went to Russia in 2003, 2004 and 2005 on religious visits. He is well versed in all the chants, a master in the construction of the Sand Mandala, trained in the Yak dance, and is an expert in butter sculpting.
Lobsang Sangye (Phuntsok)
Lobsang Sangye Lobsang Sangye (Phuntsok) was born on December 10, 1981. He became a monk in 1991 at Drepung Gomang Monastery in South India where he studied the elementary monastic texts and later the Five Major Treatises of Buddhist Philosophy. He has also studied religious chants and rituals. He is a master in the painting of the Thanka (Tibetan Buddhist scrolls) and making the cloth-stitched thanka. He has mastered the art of Sand Mandala creation and is highly skilled in butter sculpture. He was invited by a dharma center to visit Italy in 2002, 2004 and 2008.
Thubten Soepa
Thubten Soepa was born on January 26,1973. In 1979 he joined Drepung Gomang Monastery in South India, becaming a monk at the age of six. He studied elementary Buddhist texts and later studied the Five Major treatise of Buddhist philosophy. Besides his regular studies, he also took a special course in Buddhist chants and rituals. He has mastered the making of butter sculptures and is qualified in performing religious chants and rituals. He is very well-versed in creating the Sand Mandala. He visited the United States in 2003 and also visited Japan in 2006
Ngawang Jigdal
Ngawang Jigdal was born June 1, 1973. During his childhood, he always wished to become a monk. In 1985 he became a monk and studied the elementary texts at his native place for two years. His parents had a great wish to send him to one of three great seats of Buddhist Learning in order to give him a good and traditional monastic education. As a result, in 1987, he joined Drepung Gomang Monastery in South India to pursue traditional monastic studies. Since then he has been studying Buddhist Philosophy. He is very skilled in playing the dunchen (big religious horn) and the Tibetan Yak Dance. He is highly trained in the making of beautiful decorated butter sculptures and is a master in the creation of the Sand Mandala. In addition, he is very well-versed with Buddhist religious chants and rituals.
Namgyal Tsondu
Namgyal Tsondu is the new translator and driver acccompanying Drepung Gomang Tour 08-09. He joined the tour group on November 22, 2008, replacing Ngawang Gyatso (Gandhi). Tsondu has been living in Richmond, VA for the past six years. Before that time, he worked as a teacher and translator for almost five years in a Monastic School for poor and orphan monks started by Ven. Drubthob Rinpoche in Nepal.
